The Rebel Yell!!

"When we were children, some of us wanted to be'Little Sunbeams for Jesus'.Some of us wanted to be Richard Widmark in'Halls of Montezuma'.I was one of the latter."-The High and The Mighty.

Today's Topic:The Music Issue.

Well,Good Sunday Morning to all my friends out there in Cyberspace!!Hope you had a good Saturday and you gave thanks to the God of your choice*(*As Singer;Writer and former Texas Gubernatorial Candidate Richard"Kinky"Friedman always sez!!)!!

If you wanted to stay home and eat breakfast and read the Sunday Funnies, that's fine too!!Anyway,in today's edition of The Rebel Yell,I'm discussing music. As the great philosopher once claimed*(*I don't know if it was Pliny the Elder;Guatama the Buddha or Francis Albert Sinatra)"Music Hath Charms To soothe The Savage Breast".

So What's In Your CD Player??

Okay. Here are some of my favorite CD's that I like to listen to when I'm chilling around the house or driving the Jeep Cherokee around the DFW area:
(1)The Quebe Sisters Band.Three Teenaged Sisters from Burleson who sing classic country and play Fiddle and Guitar as well. The perfect antidote to the"Chicken Fried Hallmark Cards"that pass for today's Country!!

When's the last time you heard Tim McGraw or Trace Adkins sing Spade Cooley's"Shame on You"??Never!!However,Grace;Hulda and Sophie Quebe sing it and do a heckuva job to boot!!Plus, they do a bang up job with Duke Ellington's"Take the A Train";Bob Wills and all the Texas Playboys"Twin Guitar Special"and the tradional"Speed the Plow"Medley!!

(2)Songs of the West,Volume 4.This CD of theme songs to famous Western Movies and TV Shows will surely bring back childhood memories of watching Bonanza;Gunsmoke and Have Gun Will Travel(among others) on TV.

Admit it,surely there's a part of you that wants to don a poncho;pull your hat over your eyes;stick a cheroot in your pie hole and slap leather whenever you hear"The Theme to the Good; The Bad and The Ugly"!!

Well,it's there along with The Theme To Gunsmoke;Have Gun Will Travel andHigh Noon among others!!

(3)The Very Best of Big Joe Turner.Great CD by an often overlooked R&B Singer from the 50's.Whether it's the heartbreaking blues of"Chains of Love"or the joyous jump blues of"Flip,Flop and Fly',if this doesn't make you sing along with joy, there's something wrong with you!!(Or else, your'e a fan of Josh groban and/or Andrea Bocelli!!Or your'e Debbie Downer!!)

(4)Kindred Spirits:A Tribute to the Songs of Johnny Cash.An All Star Tribute To The Man In Black by Such Varied and Sundry Artists as Dwight Yoakam;Bob Dylan and Little Richard,Not To Mention His Daughter Roseanne Cash and Former Son In Law Marty Stuart.

Not a clunker in the bunch.Little Richard Does A Joyous Shout Out on"Get Rythym";Keb Mo turns"Folsom Prison Blues"into a low down blues number;Dwight Yoakam gives a good turn to"Understand Your Man"and Roseanne turns"I Still Miss Someone"into a very touching tribute to her Daddy.

(5)The Best of Carl Perkins. The Fourth Man in The Fabled"Million Dollar Quartet"of Sun Records.Carl Perkins never quite acheived the Celebrity of Elvis or Johnny Cash nor the Notoriety of Jerry Lee Lewis;but he was a legend in his own right!

His two biggest hits"Blue Suede Shoes"and"Matchbox"are on here, plus some lesser known numbers.Give a listen to"Blue Suede Shoes"and when he shouts"GO CAT GO!!"you see where Rock&Roll really comes from!!

And let's not forget the surprisingly Country sounding"Movie Magg"and the Rockabilly Classic"Dixie Fried"about a Honky Tonk Brawl!!

Well, that's all for now!!Until next time, remember,It's Almost Dawn and The Cops are Gone and Let's all get Dixie Fried!!

Deo Vindice!!
